Asin to learn Kalaripayattu

Miss Best Debutante of Bollywood will now be Miss Martial Arts of India! Asin, the breezy girl who mesmerized hearts in Hindi cinema with her chirpy girl looks in Aamir Khan-starrer Ghajini, is all set to learn the ancient martial art of Kalaripayattu (stick fighting). She will soon return to her home state Kerala to learn the art from a group of traditional Kalaripayattu gurus.
Why is she suddenly learning Kalaripayattu? The good news is that Asin will be starring in 19th Step , a Indo-Japanese romance where she will be sharing screen space with Japanese star Tadanobu Asano. A Bharat Bala production, 19th Step will portray Asin as a traditional Indian girl well-versed in martial arts and dance. To be made in Japanese and Tamil, the film will be later dubbed in Hindi.
Ask her how does it feel to go back to Kerala, her motherland? Instantly she gushes with excitement. “I needed to learn Kalaripayattu. It is considered the mother of all martial arts. Back home, I'll have a group of traditional Kalaripayattu gurus teaching me the ancient form.”
What about coming back to Tamil? Is she not worried about losing her recent fame in Bollywood? “No, I'm really not worried about not being seen often in Bollywood. Just because my Hindi film did well doesn't mean I do only Hindi films. I liked this particular Tamil film, and so I'm doing it. And I must tell you this Tamil project has been in the pipeline for three years, since the time I was busy with the Tamil Ghajini. Now, Walt Disney is producing the film and we start later this year,” says a confident Asin.
Asin's training begins in April this year.(source:tamil.galatta.com)

Don't mix art with politics, urges Kamal Haasan

Bangalore, Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan struck the right chords with fans at the Kannada film industry's platinum jubilee celebrations by urging politicians of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu not to mix art with politics.
"Let us put in efforts to strengthen the relationship between the people of the two states. We are like brothers and let's solve the problems without the intervention of others," Kamal said in his inaugural speech Sunday evening. He also pointed out that Karnataka has given Tamil film industry great actors like Rajnikant. The actor's speech enthused Kannada film personalities as well. "Kamal has made a bold speech. I really liked his spirit when he started reading from his prepared speech. And I fully agree with Kamal's opinion that art and politics should not be mixed. Artistes should be kept away from the political incidents. I'm sure that Kamal will have many supporters in the Kannada film industry," said Vishnuvardhan. Actor Ramesh Arvind, who translated Kamal's speech into Kannada, said: "Kamal is not interested in politics. He always wants art and politics to be separated. And Kamal has a great liking for our culture and heritage." Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa had inaugurated the function. Tamil superstar Rajnikant too couldn't make it to the function despite the fact that he accepted the invitation. Kamal dominated the show and was a clear winner with the people clapping at each and every sentence that he spoke. There was a baton charge by the police to control the unruly crowd outside the venue which was marred by lack of planning. The four-hour cultural programme was the highlight of the evening. It was directed by Kannada film industry's most famous actor-director V. Ravichandran(source:bollywoodworld.com)

Rahman bags 3 Hollywood offers

CHENNAI: While speculation is strife about the benefit that AR Rahman’s win in Oscars is likely to bring to Indian entertainment and sound industries, the music icon, who has grown larger than life into a maestro, has landed himself three offers from Hollywood.
“Yeah, I have received 2-3 offers,” he said in his trademark matter-of-fact tone, albeit with an added touch of euphoria. “Due to the confidentiality in the agreements, I cannot talk about them any further,” he said. He was addressing the media in Chennai on Thursday in a mood of jubilance, having slept barely seven hours after his arrival from Los Angeles at 3.
The air in the hall cackled with almost as much energy as his Oscar winning song releases. “Jai Ho! Embodies the release of an extraordinary energy,” he said. “The music enhanced the film, like the jewel on a beautiful ornament. And it, somehow, also appealed to a western sensibility.”
The musician, who did Tamil proud by addressing a few words in his mother tongue to the audience at the Kodak Theatre on Sunday, admitted that despite having forayed into different styles of music, composing for Tamil songs, having grown up with the language. But, that didn’t stop him from taking wild risks at the international stage. “Less than one-tenth of the budget of Slumdog Millionaire was allocated for its music. If I had shied away from it, I would have missed all this,” he said.
He recalled the moment nearly two decades ago, when he stood under the spotlight receiving a national award for his debut with Roja, directed by Mani Ratnam. “I had only as much expectation for this award, as I had for that one!” he said. “Well, after Golden Globe and Bafta, I had some 5% more expectation.” read more.....
